Europe has seen a lurch to the right, with anti-establishment movements spreading throughout the continent. In this special = report, SBS Dateline ask what attracts people to these extreme viewpoints and whether the far-right is here to stay. Europe's new generation of right-wingers are socially astute, and know how to make their message heard. "We see ourselves as the voice for a forgotten generation", says Martin Sellner, the young social media-savvy leader of the Identitarian group in Austria. "We want to defend the identity of Europe", he states. Groups like the Identitarians have sprung up across Europe and are a far cry from the far-right groups most people think of. Indeed, they wish to distance themselves from neo-Nazis and other such outfits, whom they see as radical - though they share the same concerns. "If you look at the younger generation, we have 60-70% of children who already have migration backgrounds", he frets. Whilst Martin and his associates assure the public they harbour no ill-will towards foreigners, just concern for their compatriots, anti-fascist activists are quick to call them out. "They say to themselves, they are not left wing, they are not right wing, they are, like, patriotic", says activist Anna Muller, "but they are really far-right". Inside the ISIS Hunt: Tracking Former Jihadi Fighters in Europe

It’s estimated that half of the foreign fighters who left Europe to join ISIS have already returned to their countries of origin. Posing as refugees or travelling on fake passports, others were able to flee the caliphate for the West and rebuild new lives. But a handful of men are on a mission to find them. At the Al-Roj camp in Syria, hundreds of women and children live in squalid conditions while the world decides what to do with them. They are the wives and children of ISIS fighters, captured when the caliphate fell. Among them are hundreds of Westerners who desperately want to come home. For the moment, there is little indication of that happening. But what about the fighters who weren’t captured? Ahmad Ramadan, 33, leads a secret network aimed at tracking down these former jihadists and holding them to account for their crimes. Today, he’s on the trail of a fighter believed to be now living in Germany. A video provided by an informer shows him training as a truck driver. Thanks to this network, high-profile members, like jihadi spokesman Abdul Kader el Raqqaoui, have been arrested in Europe. But the members themselves pay a heavy price and are themselves the target of ISIS reprisals. This documentary was first released in 2021.

The Slave Trade Mainstream Media Hates To Talk About

The Sahara is the world’s largest desert and crossing it is only possible thanks to scattered oases that provide life-sustaining water to travelers along the way. For those untrained in handling it, the Sahara is a place of death and despair. This was certainly true for millions of slaves who were dragged in chains across that burning desert for a thousand years. This Trans-Saharan Slave Trade is easily overlooked thanks to its more famous Atlantic cousin, but the exchange of unfree people across the desert was a longer lasting and possibly larger system that deserves much ore attention. Today on A Day In History we look at the brutality of the Trans-Saharan Slave Trade and how this institution of slavery and suffering stood for over a thousand years. Origins of Trans-Saharan Slave Trade Slavery within and around the Sahara is as ancient as civilization. Ancient Egyptians extracted slaves from adjacent regions in modern day Sudan and Libya. Later, Phoenician settlers along the fertile Mediterranean Coast, most notably Carthage, established slave trading networks that included slaves taken from all areas of the Mediterranean Basin. But the scattered inhabitants of the Sahara could not satisfy the growing demand for slaves forever. Eventually, traders began using the Sahara as a passageway to access and enslave the people of Sub-Saharan Africa. Historians are unsure who began the trans-Saharan slave trade or when. Herodotus writing in the 5th century BC described a people called the Garamentenes from Libya who allegedly used their chariots to hunt down Ethiopian slaves, and some historians say they were the first trans-Saharan slavers. However, there is no material evidence of these vast slave trading networks and it’s more likely these were just slave raids deepers into the Sahara and not a true trans-Saharan slave trading system. Small numbers of Sub-Saharan Africa slaves existed in Roman North Africa by the 300s. Artwork recovered from Roman villas shows figures who seem to be Black Africans working in fields and hunting, showing that at least some slave trading across the desert existed by this point. However, it wasn’t until the arrival of Islam and the Arabs to North Africa that a larger sustained system of slave trading emerged. Describing the Trans-Saharan Slave Trade Arab armies conquered most of North Africa by the early 8th century. The unified ‘Abbasid Caliphate connected the Islamic world religiously and economically, and slaves would soon move along these connections. Like every major contemporary society, the Islamic world had a great need for slaves, and quickly found that the rural berbers of North Africa were not enough to satisfy the demands of their interconnected world. This was northern Europe's St Valentine's Day massacre, the worst ever mafia bloodbath outside Italy and the United States. Suddenly, journalists across the globe were struggling with what the New York Times called an 'unpronounceable name': 'ndrangheta (en-drang-get-ah.) In the 1990s, the 'ndrangheta placed itself in a leading position in the European wholesale cocaine market by dealing direct with South American producers. It is now thought to be the wealthiest and most powerful of Italy's major criminal brotherhoods. But how, when, and why did it first emerge?

Ukraine update: Heavy losses and evidence of brutality | DW News

Ukrainian troops are trying to hold off Russian attacks in much of Ukraine's east. The Kremlin is seeking to capture the industrial Donbas region, but many observers say that Russian gains are smaller than expected. Ukraine has admitted heavy losses in the east, but says Russian casualties are far higher. Evidence of Russian brutality under Vladimir Putin has shocked western officials - even those with military backgrounds. On March 4th, eight days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Russian forces took control of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The Russians have kept the Zaporizhzhia plant running – with Ukrainian staff. But there have been reports of Russian troops forcing engineers to work under extreme pressure. There are also concerns that fighting near the plant has caused damage or could cause a nuclear accident. Ukraine says Russia sent eight specialists from its state nuclear company to the plant, where they demanded managers give them confidential data about its operation. The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, has urged international nuclear specialists be granted access to the plant as soon as possible. And Russia has been relentlessly bombarding Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-biggest city, for weeks. Most people there have left, but many remain.
