Ukraine says it repelled Russian forces at battle in Kyiv suburbs | Ukraine latest
Ukraine claims it has retaken strategically important Kyiv suburb. The Ukrainian military said its troops have driven Russian forces out of Makariv, a town about 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of Kyiv. The strategically important town was the scene of a fierce battle and has sustained significant damage from Russian shelling, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said, adding its recapture prevents Russian forces from encircling the capital from the northwest. The "state flag of Ukraine was raised over the city of Makariv" as the Russians retreated, the ministry wrote in a post on Facebook. DW could not confirm the claim by the Ukraine forces. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine was willing to consider dropping its demands for full NATO membership in exchange for security guarantees. "It's a compromise for everyone: for the West, which doesn't know what to do with us with regard to NATO, for Ukraine, which wants security guarantees, and for Russia, which doesn't want further NATO expansion," Zelenskyy said late Monday in an interview with Ukrainian television channels. Ukraine is well aware it cannot be admitted to NATO at the moment because they "do not want to fight with Russia," Zelenskyy said, adding, "Okay, what other security guarantees are possible?" Zelenskyy was adamant that he needed to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putinin order to understand whether Russia even intends to stop the war. Putin has so far ignored Zelenskyy repeated requests for direct talks. On Monday, Zelenskyy said again that he is ready to meet Putin "in any format" but would also not bow to ultimatums from Russia to surrender. The president also suggested that after a cease-fire agreement, Kyiv would be ready to discuss the status of Crimea and the eastern Donbas region held by Russian-backed separatists. However, Zelenskyy said he plans to put any agreements reached with Russia to a nationwide referendum for public approval. Russia's Foreign Ministry says it has withdrawn from peace treaty negotiations with Japan, as a result of sanctions imposed by Tokyo over the invasion of Ukraine. "Under the current conditions Russia does not intend to continue negotiations with Japan on a peace treaty," the foreign ministry said and cited Japan's "openly unfriendly positions and attempts to damage the interests of our country." Last week Japan announced plans to revoke Moscow's trade status and expand freezing of assets against Russian individuals. Russia and Japan have not officially ended World War II hostilities due to a dispute over islands north of Hokkaido. And Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida hit back at Russia's decision to withdraw from the peace treaty. "The latest situation occurred as a result of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, and Russia's attempt to shift the issue to Japan-Russia relations is extremely unjustified and absolutely unacceptable," he said in parliament. Japan "strongly protests," he added, condemning Russia for its actions to "unilaterally change the status quo by force." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said again that he is ready to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin "in any format" but would also not bow to ultimatums from Russia to surrender. Russian publication Komsomolskaya Pravda briefly published a casualty figure of nearly 10,000 deaths of Russian soldiers since the invasion of Ukraine on February 24 began, but then deleted it. US President Joe Biden says Vladimir Putin is considering the use of biological and chemical weapons as a false flag attack, based on US intelligence assessments. The Pentagon has accused Russian forces of committing war crimes in Ukraine and said it would help gather evidence of them. The European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday that Russia's attacks on the Ukrainian coastal city of Mariupol amount to a "war crime." German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) lawmaker Michael Brand called for sanctions against former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder over his strong links with Russia. Humanitarian organization Save the Children said upwards of 6 million children are in imminent danger as a growing number of hospitals and schools come under attack during Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. A Moscow court ruled in favor of Russia's FSB intelligence services on Monday, agreeing to label the US internet giant Meta (formerly Facebook) an "extremist organization." RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR Breaking News Heavy blow from Google to the Russian military Putin is very angry
There's a new move from Google Maps that's going to piss Russia off. According to this, Google Maps reportedly made Russian military bases visible to users. Google banned advertising from Russian users after the Kremlin invaded Ukraine, and Russian authorities accused Google of starting a “information war” with the company blocking Russian media on YouTube. A new move came today from the United States-based technology giant after the strings between Russia and Google were stretched. According to new information, Google Maps made Russia's strategic military facilities visible to users. Following this move, new details of Russia's military infrastructure were revealed. In the search of Google Maps, images of military bases, intercontinental ballistic missiles, launch ramps, marine facilities and key command points all over Russia have become accessible. Some of the new footage revealed were Admiral Kuznetsov's aircraft carrier, a nuclear weapons depot near Murmansk, submarines in Kamcatka, the far East Peninsula, and images of a military air base in Kursk, a Western city just 150 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border. Under normal circumstances, satellite images of military facilities are traditionally presented to users of blurry or lower quality by Google Maps to maintain their classified status. But with this move from Google wing, this has changed. "Everyone can now see the Russian military infrastructure at a resolution of about 0.5 meters per pixel," the Twitter post by the Ukrainian Armed Forces said.

Russia warns West against sending weapons to Ukraine - BBC News
Moscow has formally warned of "unpredictable consequences" if the US and allies keep supplying weapons to Ukraine. But Ukraine's President Zelensky said "you can make the war shorter" if the world keeps supplying weapons to the country. He warned of the possibility of Russia targeting Ukraine with a nuclear strike. Overnight new strikes hit the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and explosions were heard in the western city of Lviv. Russia has today banned UK PM Boris Johnson and other senior ministers from entering Russia over the country's "hostile" stance on the war. Russia estimated to have lost a third of its ground combat force in Ukraine - BBC News
Britain's Ministry of Defence says Russia has lost about a third of its ground combat force since the war began in Ukraine at the end of February. The Russian invasion has been hampered by stiff Ukrainian resistance and logistical issues. Nato secretary general Jens Stoltenberg also said Russia's war in Ukraine is not going to plan and that its attempt to capture the eastern Donbas region has "stalled". "They failed to take Kyiv, they are pulling back from around Kharkiv, their major offensive in Donbas has stalled. Russia is not achieving its strategic objectives," he said. Stoltenberg added that Ukraine could win the conflict. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog #Russia #Ukraine #BBCNews

Ukraine update: Heavy losses and evidence of brutality | DW News
Ukrainian troops are trying to hold off Russian attacks in much of Ukraine's east. The Kremlin is seeking to capture the industrial Donbas region, but many observers say that Russian gains are smaller than expected. Ukraine has admitted heavy losses in the east, but says Russian casualties are far higher. Evidence of Russian brutality under Vladimir Putin has shocked western officials - even those with military backgrounds. On March 4th, eight days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Russian forces took control of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The Russians have kept the Zaporizhzhia plant running – with Ukrainian staff. But there have been reports of Russian troops forcing engineers to work under extreme pressure. There are also concerns that fighting near the plant has caused damage or could cause a nuclear accident. Ukraine says Russia sent eight specialists from its state nuclear company to the plant, where they demanded managers give them confidential data about its operation. The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, has urged international nuclear specialists be granted access to the plant as soon as possible. And Russia has been relentlessly bombarding Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-biggest city, for weeks. Most people there have left, but many remain. Paramilitaries in Ukraine - How Ramzan Kadyrov and Chechen mercenaries shape the war | DW News
The leader of the Russian province of Chechnya is calling for the storming of Ukraine's capital Kyiv as part of Russia's so-called 'special military operation.' For years, soldiers from Chechnya have been fighting alongside pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. Chechen separatists fought two wars against Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. But Russia violently defeated the separatists. Now, Chechnya is part of the Russian Federation and is ruled by Ramzan Kadyrov - a loyal ally of President Vladimir Putin. Putin has repeatedly called upon Kadyrov's paramilitary fighters to undertake risky missions in Ukraine. But some Chechen separatists have also joined the war - fighting against Russian forces. _ 00:00 The war within one: Pro-Russian Chechnyan paramilitaries 07:21 Skepticism over Russia's withdrawal pledge 07:51 Ukraine proposes neutrality 12:45 Can the withdrawal pledge be trusted? 16:14 Germany's emergency plan for cut-off gas supplies Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/deutschewelleenglish?sub_confirmation=1 For more news go to: https://bit.ly/356QarS Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: https://bit.ly/3N92EjL ►Twitter: https://twitter.com/dwnews ►Instagram: https://bit.ly/3D22s16 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: https://www.youtube.com/dwdeutsch #Chechnya #Paramilitary #Ukraine

"You cannot seriously sit down with Putin anymore" - German diplomat Christoph Heusgen
Christoph Heusgen has worked in foreign policy for more than 40 years, has caused a stir with many an edgy word during his career as a diplomat. This year the 66-year-old took over the Munich Security Conference (MSC), a globally respected forum for foreign and security policy. For months, and not just in light of the Ukraine conflict, he has been calling for a united community of "states that enforce international law." Heusgen is considered one of Germany's most experienced and respected diplomats. Although he was late to serve formally as an ambassador, he has been politically active at the European level and in the United States, though never in Africa, Asia or Latin America. Heusgen, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), became active in foreign policy posts early in his career. From 1993 to 1997, he was deputy head of the minister's office for the then German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel. From 1999 to 2005, he headed the Brussels office and political staff of Javier Solana, then High Representative for the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy. After Angela Merkel's victory in the 2005 election, the new chancellor brought Heusgen, a Rhineland Catholic, into the chancellor's office as her foreign policy adviser. He was at the chancellor's side on virtually all of her foreign trips and has been excellently networked ever since. Occasionally, he traveled without her, but for her: When it emerged in the fall of 2013 that US intelligence agencies had wiretapped Merkel's phone, cooling transatlantic relations, Heusgen was part of the German delegation that sought clarification in Washington. Months before Merkel's fourth federal election victory in 2017, she had to let Heusgen go. The diplomat, who had already spent some time studying in the US in the 1980s and had worked at the German Consulate General in Chicago after 1983, now finally became an ambassador. For four years, he was Germany's permanent representative at the United Nations in New York. In April 2019 and July 2020, he presided over meetings of the UN Security Council, the top-level body to which Germany does not belong permanently but in which it wants to have a say. Here too, on occasion, he did not shy away from describing Russia's and China's blocking of UN aid deliveries to war-torn Syria as "cynical." Both expressed irritation at Germany's stance. Heusgen is certainly thought of as a man of clear words, clearer than cross the lips of many other ambassadors. This has perhaps been all the more true since 2021, when he returned to Germany. Perhaps he has been so outspoken about the current conflict in Ukraine because he was involved in the difficult negotiations that led to the Minsk Agreement in 2014, which brought Ukraine, Russia and the separatists together but fell apart soon after. Why Russia is Scared of Finland Joining NATO
On February 24th, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to make his mark on Russian history by restoring Ukraine to a puppet state and pushing NATO back and away from its borders. Instead, President Putin will go down in history as the man who made NATO great again and even added additional countries to its roster. But why is Russia so scared of Finland and Sweden joining NATO? The Russian invasion of Ukraine was provoked in large part by the nation's refusal to submit to Kremlin authority. After a presidential coup in 2014, Ukraine looked like it was on a path to join the West and leave Russia behind. Enshrined in its constitution was an amendment that Ukraine would pursue NATO membership as a matter of highest priority, and work began on meeting the requirements for entry into the alliance. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE TO THE INFOGRAPHICS SHOW ► https://www.youtube.com/c/theinfographicsshowOFFICIAL?sub_confirmation=1 🔖 MY SOCIAL PAGES TikTok ► https://bit.ly/3MBb17q Discord ► https://bit.ly/3pUN2X5 Facebook ► https://bit.ly/3vPLG3B Twitter ► https://twitter.com/TheInfoShow 💭 Find more interesting stuff on: https://bit.ly/3ISx7jz 📝 SOURCES: All videos are based on publicly available information unless otherwise noted.

Finnish President tells Russia 'You caused this' as he signs security pact with UK
